A not-for-profit Life Plan Community since 1983

Longtime friends are as important as long‑term care.

Twin Lakes Community is a neighborhood where independence is treasured, and where the transition isn't about what you give up, but what you've gained. Live, learn and grow at a place where community comes first.

Designated a CCRC by the NC Department of Insurance CARF accredited CMS five‑star Over 40 years

Our mission and core values

We celebrate the progression of life and the dignity of the individual.

As a non-profit built on Christian values, we celebrate the progression of life and dignity of the individual by empowering all members of our community to live, work and serve to their fullest potential.

Twin Lakes began as a legacy of the family of Wade G. and Agnes Coble. As members of Macedonia Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Cobles left a bequest of $3.5 million to the church to establish health services for older adults in Alamance County. The local church formed Lutheran Retirement Ministries of Alamance County, NC and began the mission which became Twin Lakes Community. We first opened our doors in March 1983 with Coble Creek Healthcare, three apartment buildings and ten cottages.

We are not owned by a private company or stockholders. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors which serves as a policy-making body and is comprised of residents at Twin Lakes as well as various professionals from the surrounding area.

Our vision: Enriching Lives. Creating Community. Expanding Horizons.

Christ-CenteredLove, compassion, care, stewardship and service are at the heart of all we do.
Financially StableTo honor our commitments to all members of our community, we must be good stewards of the resources provided to us.
People FirstWe provide innovative opportunities for personal fulfillment, dignity and well-being for all members of our community.
QualityWe are committed to enriching lives by providing superior services with integrity.
InclusiveWe celebrate the diversity of our community and welcome people of all faiths, races, cultures and life experiences.

How it works

A simple, friendly process, and you keep your place in line.

Applicants are added to our priority waiting list in the order in which applications are completed and approved. You retain your place on the list until you become a resident, so you may change your date of residency, your choice of homes, or defer admission without losing your place.

Come and look around

Plan a visit and walk the grounds. Take a virtual tour of a Garden Home, a Stockton apartment, a Villa or a Wittenberg apartment first if that is easier.

Choose a home and a contract

Pick the residence that fits, then choose between the 50% refundable contract and the standard 30-month declining refund contract.

Join the priority list

Complete the application. You go onto the priority waiting list in order, and your place is yours to keep while you decide on timing.

Move in, and keep going

Inside and outside maintenance, utilities, basic cable, Wi-Fi campus-wide, landscaping, the Thrive wellness classes, the nurse's clinic and 24-hour in-house medical response come with the monthly fee. No homeownership responsibilities.

Life at the Lakes

It's intentional.

Our neighborhoods are filled with people who chose Twin Lakes for various reasons, but the one thing they have in common is the desire for a well-rounded life surrounded by people who are engaged and open to new experiences, new people and new ideas. Take an exercise or a swim class. Create a masterpiece in our fully equipped woodworking shop. Enjoy the spirited competition of bocce, pickle ball and horseshoes, or the solitude of a good book in our library.

Frequent questions

Everything you need to know about Twin Lakes Community.

If you do not see a question you wish to be answered, please send us a request on our contact form below.

What is a CCRC?

CCRCs, also known as Life Plan communities, are communities that provide a continuum of care to older adults under a contract for the life of an individual. Typically, there are three levels of care offered: Independent Living, Assisted Living, and Skilled Nursing Care. Twin Lakes offers all three levels, in addition to an exceptional Memory Care residence. Fees, services offered, accommodation choices, and contract options vary with each facility. The NC Department of Insurance oversees all CCRCs in the state.

Who owns Twin Lakes Community?

We are not owned by a private company or stockholders. We are governed by a volunteer Board of Directors which serves as a policy-making body and is comprised of residents at Twin Lakes as well as various professionals from the surrounding area. Day-to-day operations are under the direction of our President and CEO. We are a non-profit organization, which means none of our earnings can be used for the benefit of, or be distributed to our directors, officers or other private individuals; profits are returned to Twin Lakes Community for the pursuance of our mission.

What is your application process?

We have a very simple, friendly application process. Applicants are added to our priority waiting list in the order in which applications are completed and approved. You retain your place on the list until you become a resident; thus, you may change your date of residency, choice of homes or defer admission without losing your place on the list.

What is my expected wait time for availability?

Twin Lakes Community consistently maintains one of the highest occupancy rates in the industry. However, because we are one of the largest CCRCs in the state offering 474 independent living choices, the wait time is usually not as long as many other communities. The variables of unit turnover and acceptance by someone ahead of you on the priority list determine the wait time.

What are the age requirements for admission?

An individual or one member of the couple must attain the age of 62 before admission.

Is the admission fee refundable?

Yes. Under our standard contract option, the admission fee is refundable in an amount reduced on a pro-rated basis for 30 months. After 30 months, no portion of the admission fee is refundable. We also offer a 50% refund paid after you cease to be a resident of Twin Lakes.

What services are provided as part of the monthly fee?

Services include all utilities other than telephone; basic cable television; garbage and recyclable pickup; and Wi-Fi service in each home and campus-wide. Inside and outside maintenance services provide the resident with no homeownership responsibilities. Full-time security staff, landscaping services, all exercise classes in our comprehensive Thrive wellness program, a nurse's clinic, and 24-hour in-house medical response are also included.

Is there a required meal plan?

No. Having no mandatory meal plan gives Twin Lakes residents the pleasure and flexibility of enjoying one of the area's many diverse restaurant choices or their own home cooking. Twin Lakes offers three dining options on campus: The Hearth Cafe, The Blue Heron Pub and The Terrace Restaurant. Residents pay only for the meals they choose to eat here. Tipping is not permitted for any service provided at Twin Lakes.

Do I pay property taxes?

Because you own a contract of services at Twin Lakes rather than a deed to a home you do not pay property taxes.

How would you describe your residents?

Our residents come from diverse backgrounds, careers, and interests bringing a wealth of experiences and expertise to our community. As a resident stated, one of the many things that attracted us to Twin Lakes was the diversity of backgrounds of residents and how well they blend. Volunteerism is exceptionally strong at Twin Lakes. Our residents and staff contribute more than 16,000 hours each year in volunteer services to the broader community; Twin Lakes won the North Carolina Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service from the Office of the Governor.
